Experience the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve and stay with us at the Volcano Huts, surrounded by the beautiful landscape of Þórsmörk.

Þórsmörk Basecamp

Unforgettable adventure getaway into the highlands of Iceland.

Trip Overview

The road to Þórsmörk offers a scenic SUPERJEEP drive along the foothills of the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier & Volcano with 4x4 river crossings and scenic stops to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Upon arrival at the Volcano Huts, we head out for a 1-2 hour guided hike, where you will enjoy the best panoramic views of the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve and the Eyjafjallajökull area. If you feel like walking a bit further or you would prefer to hike on your own, then we will give you a map and directions to follow the hiking trails in Þórsmörk.

Returning to the Volcano Huts you will find the sauna and showers waiting where you can relax after your walk. After dinner, we might enjoy clear skies throughout the evening to view the stars and the Northern Lights from around the campfire and hopefully spot the elusive Kári the Arctic Fox before going to bed.

In the morning we are free to wander out to explore more of Þórsmörk before or after breakfast as there are more trails to be discovered a short distance from our basecamp.

At 10:00 we drive back across the rivers, down the valley and onto the main road back to where we started the day before.

This offer can be extended for more than one night upon request and is valid for both groups and individuals.

Snowshoes and hiking poles are available at the Volcano Huts for winter and snowy conditions.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival day

We pick you up at 11:00 on our modified 4x4 SUPERJEEP by Hamragarðar next to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. Then we head onto the famous F249 4x4 Trail into Þórsmörk. We drive along the foothills of the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier & Volcano, crossing many rivers along the way and stopping by the outlet glacier Gígjökull where evidence of the 2010 Volcanic Eruption can be witnessed first hand.

The drive to the Volcano Huts takes about 1h - 1h30m with beautiful scenery along the way.

Upon arrival at the Volcano Huts in Þórsmörk we have the option to enjoy a warm soup before we head out for our guided excursion of the day [lunch as optional add on]. We will follow trails to nearby landmarks and visit beautiful locations where we can enjoy the best panoramic views of Þórsmörk Nature Reserve. Seasoned hikers have the option to extend their walks on their own further into the nature reserve.

When we return to the Volcano Huts we have the option to rest and recoup in our rooms, take a shower and sauna or simply have a refreshing drink by the bar.

Dinner is available at the Volcano Huts from 18:30 - 21:00 [optional add-on] and a small campfire will keep us warm while we wait for the Northern Lights to come out before we return to bed. Be sure to keep an eye out for Kári the Arctic Fox and Lord of Þórsmörk.

Day 2 - Departure day

Breakfast is served between 8:00 and 10:00 which gives early risers time to go out and explore more of the trails and beautiful places of the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve before departing the valley. Nearby attractions include the Sönghellir cave, Valahnukur Mountain and the Markarfljót Hamrar cliffs. All of these and more sights are within reach of a brisk morning walk. Snowshoes and hiking poles are available in winter to make it easier for us to walk in the snow.

We leave at 10:00 back across the rivers on our SUPERJEEPS. Extra nights can be added to this program for those that want to explore more of the Þórsmörk Nature Reserve.
