Tour overview
Nauthúsagil Canyon is a well-hidden gem and one of the many natural attractions along the F249 Eyjafjallajökull Volcano Trail. The Canyon is accessible from the start of the F249 Trail and offers an impressive look at the canyon with its green moss-covered walls with a beautiful overhanging birch tree canopy overhead. The trail into the canyon leads you a short walk along the river bed all the way into the bottom of the ravine where you can stand in front of the impressive 30 meters high cascading waterfall, surrounded by the bright green moss-covered bedrock. Legend has it that the farm Nauthús which the canyon is named after was the stage for violent events in the 18th century and the place where the farm once stood has been haunted ever since.
The walk into the canyon can also be complemented by walking up alongside the edges of the canyon, looking down through the birch tree canopy and overlooking the waterfall from another viewpoint. The walk up alongside the canyon offers beautiful views of the neighbouring farmlands and Markarfljót River.
